The Effectiveness of Community Policing in Addressing Rising Crime Rates in Kwara State, Nigeria

This study evaluated the effectiveness of community policing in mitigating the escalating crime rates in Kwara State, Nigeria. Through a descriptive survey design, data was collected from 564 respondents across three selected local government areas. In an attempt to do justice to this paper, the researchers employed both primary and secondary sources for data collection. The findings reveal that while community policing has contributed to reducing certain types of crime, its overall impact on crime rates is limited. The study identifies significant challenges such as lack of trust, inadequate resources, and corruption within the police force, which hinder the effectiveness of community policing. Despite these challenges, the study underscores the potential of community policing to enhance security if implemented with greater emphasis on building trust, improving communication, and providing adequate resources. The research concludes by recommending strategies to strengthen police-community relations, enhance police capacity, and address underlying societal issues that contribute to crime
