A Review of the Phenomenon of Kidnapping in Nigeria

This study examines the pervasive phenomenon of kidnapping in Nigeria, exploring its historical evolution, regional variations, and multifaceted impacts on society. The research investigates the diverse motivations driving kidnapping, ranging from economic gain to political leverage and even ritualistic purposes. Drawing upon multiple theoretical frameworks, including the political economy of crime theory, frustration-aggression theory, relative deprivation theory, and routine activities theory, the study analyzes the root causes and contributing factors to this escalating crisis. The findings highlight the detrimental effects of kidnapping on Nigeria's socio-economic development, national security, and international image. The study also critically assesses the effectiveness of existing countermeasures implemented by the government and proposes evidence-based recommendations to enhance security and combat kidnapping more effectively. By understanding the complexity of this crime, this research aims to inform policymakers, security agencies, and community leaders in their efforts to mitigate the scourge of kidnapping and create a safer and more secure environment for all Nigerians
