Plagiarism occurs when an author takes ideas, information, or words from another source without properly citing the source. Even when it occurs unintentionally, plagiarism is still a serious academic offense and is unacceptable in international academic publications.

 

If the author knows specific information (names, dates, places, statistical numbers, or other detailed information) from a particular source, citation is required. (This is only excused in cases of common knowledge, where the data is available in more than five sources or is common knowledge, for example, the fact that Indonesia is the most populous Muslim country in the world.)

 

When the author takes an idea from another author, a citation is required even if the author then develops the idea further. This could be an idea about how to interpret the data, what methodology to use or what conclusions to draw. It could be an idea about a broad development in a field or general information. Whatever the idea, the author must cite the source. In cases where the author develops the idea further, it is still necessary to cite the original source of the idea, and then in the next sentence, the author can explain his or her more developed idea.

 

When the author takes the words of another author, citations and quotation marks are required. When four or more consecutive words are identical to a source that the author has read, the author must use quotation marks to indicate the use of the other author's original words; a mere quotation is no longer sufficient.
